Who is paying the EFL?

New research identifies sponsorship risks which could leave EFL clubs exposed

InsightX has examined the front-of-shirt sponsors of all 72 Championship, League One and League Two clubs for the 2026/27 season.

We wanted to understand who’s funding EFL football, where the money comes from and what risks these sponsorship deals could pose to clubs.

Key findings

  • Gambling sponsorship is concentrated in the Championship: All seven operators are GB-licensed.
  • Offshore licensing appears in League One: Clubs risk reputational damage if a sponsor operates in markets where it isn’t authorised, potentially exposing the partnership to regulatory scrutiny.
  • Local businesses and ownership links feature heavily in the lower leagues: Clubs need to establish whether smaller sponsors can meet their financial commitments, while deals involving club owners warrant scrutiny to ensure they are fair and transparent.
  • The report identifies four areas of potential sponsorship risk for EFL clubs: Regulatory status, ability to pay, licensing and ownership, with real-world examples illustrating the implications for clubs.

The full report includes:

  • A breakdown of shirt sponsorship across all three EFL divisions
  • Real-world examples illustrating potential sponsorship risks
  • Five questions clubs should ask before signing a new commercial partner

About the research: InsightX identified and categorised front-of-shirt sponsors using club announcements, local and trade press, and kit records. The research covers the main home shirt of all 72 EFL clubs and reflects publicly available information as at 9 October 2026. Inclusion does not imply wrongdoing by any club or sponsor.
